Three top tips for maintaining garden tools

Winter is a good time to clean and sharpen garden tools, especially when it's too wet and cold to play in the soil.

My former horticulture teacher and landscape gardener Neil Clarkson was a stickler for cleaning tools at the end of the gardening day. That was usually just a clean down with hose, bucket and brush.

But every winter, when the cold, wet weather set in we would congregate in the warm shed and give our tools a thorough going over.
